Ichetucknee Springs Suite

Ichetucknee Springs Suite of original watercolors is inspired by my weekly visits to the Ichetucknee Springs State Park in Columbia County Florida. The springs, spring run, wetlands and forest reveal themselves in changing patterns of flower bloom, birdsong and human activity. On some days the sun pours down and on other days the upwelling of spring water seems matched by the torrential downpour of rain from above, flashes of lightning reflecting off the shimmering surface of the spring pools.

It is a truism known to Florida’s artists and photographers that bad weather makes for vivid color. Full sun in Florida bleaches out saturated color. By contrast, Florida light is bright even on an overcast day. It is on a gray day that it is easiest to see down into the heart of the spring. An added advantage is that on dismal gray day there are fewer people disturbing the sediments. The water is clearer. No matter the weather, it is always a treat to dive in and go deep. The colors reveal themselves best to the underwater visitor.

I would love it if you would visit BelovedBlueRiver.org, the website I created on behalf of the Ichetucknee Alliance. You’ll enjoy photos, paintings, poetry and lots of information about the Ichetucknee Springs and other Florida related water content.

Note: while I do my best to represent colors accurately, paint and paper are physical entities, not pixels, so they appear differently to the eye in different lighting conditions. As an artist I tend to think that the physical work of art looks better, but I want you to be aware that the actual painting does not look identical to what you see on your screen.
